Prominent Radio Anchor Shot in Head While On-air with Facebook Livestream

A popular Filipino radio host is dead after police say someone shot him while he was hosting a Facebook livestream from his home in The Philippines Sunday morning.

According to Misamis Occidental police, the accused shooter pretended to be an audience member before murdering on-air host, 57-year-old Juan Jumalon. Thousands of viewers watched the attack as Jumalon went on-air with 94.7 Calamba Gold FM.

The victim’s wife rushed him to an area hospital following the shooting, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooter, according to police, is not seen on the video, but investigators released a sketch of the suspect Monday morning, The Washington Post reports. The suspect is described as a male in his 40s who was wearing a green shirt, “black short pants,” and a red cap.

Rappler reports that Misamis Occidental police director, Colonel Dwight Monato, said the victim was in a heated spat with two people prior to the shooting. The gunman fled the scene on a motorcycle with another person, following the shooting. Police said that the shooter snatched Jumalon’s necklace before leaving the scene.

“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” Ferdinand Marcos Jr, president of the Philippines, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“I condemn in the strongest terms the murder of broadcaster Juan Jumalon. I have instructed the PNP to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.”
