Late last month, New York State Police identified a homicide victim whose body was found at a state park.
Yoneli Abimael Ramos Moreno, 20, was discovered dead off a trail at Sunken Meadow State Park on October 30. Though Moreno’s body was found about 30 miles from Gilgo Beach — where accused serial killer Rex Heuermann allegedly dumped at least three women’s bodies — state police noted that his death is believed to have occurred recently and have denied any connection.
Heuermann was arrested in July for the 2009 and 2010 murders of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27. He is also the prime suspect in the death of 25-year-old Maureen Brainard-Barnes. The four women were reportedly wrapped in burlap and buried next to each other on Gilgo Beach.
In regards to Moreno’s death, WNBC reported that the medical examiner will perform an autopsy to confirm a cause of death.
Police, however, said that the death was recent and has not been connected to Heuremann, who has been incarcerated since July. Heuermann remains jailed without bail as police expand their investigation to Suffolk County and New York City.
“This is an active investigation and the State Police is asking for any witnesses or anyone with information to call 631-756-3300,” New York State Police said, in reference to Moreno.
