Serial Killer Suspect Rex Heuermann Signs Long Island Home Over to Wife

Long Island serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann has signed over his run-down Long Island home to his wife as sole owner.

Asa Ellerup filed for divorce days after Heuermann’s arrest for the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy in July. Their bodies were found, along with that of Maureen Brainerd-Barnes, on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. Heuermann is reportedly the prime suspect in Brainerd-Barnes’s death.

At the time, her attorney, Robert Macedonio, said the divorce was a precautionary move to protect the family assets in case victims decide to sue.

According to the US Sun, Heuermann filed the deed transfer for the Massapequa Park home, valued at $530,000, on September 22 for no money. The paperwork was finalized on October 5.

The Sun reported that Heuermann bought the home from his parents for $170,000 in 1994. The house was subject to nearly two weeks of intensive and invasive searching after Heuermann’s July 13 arrest.

Heuermann is expected in court Wednesday morning for a brief conference, and his wife is expected to attend for the first time, Newsday reported.

“She wants to see and hear the evidence that’s presented in court,” said Macedonio, who said he would be with her on Wednesday. “The only thing she knows about this case is what’s been reported in the media … If this happened, he was living a complete double life.”

Macedonio said that Ellerup would not be making any public statements..

Ellerup visited her husband for the first time earlier this month, as CrimeOnline reported. Heuermann’s daughter, Victoria Heuermann, and stepson, Christopher Sheridan, have not visited.

Heuermann is not contesting the divorce, and the documents for it remain under seal.

Wednesday’s court appearance is a conference to be held in the chambers of State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei, who is expected to rule on requests by media outlets to record the proceedings, court spokesperson Timothy Finnerty said.

Heuermann was linked to the killings by DNA and cell phone data, investigators have said
