Around 13 minutes after opening for Black Friday, New Jersey State Police issued an evacuation at New Jersey’s American Dream Mall in Rutherford, due to a reported phoned-in bomb threat.
Western Journal reports that the mall opened at around 7 a.m. and by 7:13 a.m., police received a call from someone who warned of an explosive device planted inside the mall. Customers said they received emergency alerts on their phones, telling them to exit the building immediately.
“For your safety, the NJSP has reported an emergency situation at the American Dream,” the message read. “All guests, tenants and employees should walk to the nearest exit and evacuate the building. DO NOT use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway and follow the exit signs.”

NorthJersey.com reports that the mall re-opened at around 9:30 a.m. after officials determined that there was not an “immediate threat,” according to Gov. Phil Murphy.
Following the evacuation, the mall issued a statement indicating that the incident was a “non-credible” threat but swift action was taken to ensure the safety of the public.
“American Dream was evacuated this morning following what was later deemed a non-credible threat. This was done out of an abundance of caution, as the safety of our employees and guests is and will always be our priority. … We look forward to a joyous and safe holiday season.”
