A Michigan police officer is recovering after he was attacked by a 20-year-old man during a traffic stop in Melvindale.

The unnamed officer pulled over a black Kia Forte on Tuesday night after seeing it speeding and running over construction cone, Melvindale Police said.

Once he got the vehicle stopped, he asked for the driver’s license, only to be told he didn’t have it on him and to “go look him up.” When the officer asked for proof of insurance, police said, the driver became “verbally hostile” and began reaching around inside the vehicle. The officer asked him to turn the vehicle off and hand over the keyes.

The driver refused to do so and instead began raising the windows. The officer retreated to his patrol vehicle and called for backup, using his public address system to order the man to lower the windows. He refused several orders before finally lowering the driver’s side window, but he refused to get out of the car.

“The officer reached to open the door, and the driver grrabbed the officer’s arm,” police said. “The door opened, and the driver attacked the officer, kicking him multiple times and grabbing the officers duty vest. Backup arrived and officers were able to place the man in handcuffs and take him into custody.”

The driver was ticketed, arrested, and taken to jail, and his car was impounded. Police did not identify him or say what charges he faces.

The officer sustained injuries to his legs and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
