A 3-month-old Alabama boy was fatally mauled on Thursday by his family’s pet wolf-hybrid.
The unidentified infant reportedly died shortly after Shelby County police were called to a Chelsea home regarding the attack. A veterinarian euthanized the wolf-hybrid involved in the fatal attack at the scene, according to the Shelby County Reporter.
While Chelsea Mayor Tony Picklesimer said there were “no restrictions” to owning the kind of animal involved in Thursday’s fatal mauling, WTVM reported that it is illegal to keep wolf-hybrids as pets in Alabama as there are no rabies vaccines for them. According to the news outlet, there are no local ordinances in Chelsea which prohibit the ownership of wolf-hybrids
Per the Shelby County Reporter, the infant’s death remains under investigation as authorities determine whether other instances of child endangerment had transpired.
