A 5-year-old Detroit is dead after he shot himself while jumping on a bed, playing with an unsecured and loaded handgun.
Detroit Police Chief James White said the boy and four other young children home alone Saturday afternoon when the incident took place at about 1:30 p.m., WDIV reported.
The gun was left on the dresser in the bedroom, he said.
“(The) 5-year-old gets the weapon, is playing with the weapon, jumping up and down on the bed, turns the gun on himself and shoots himself in the face and died at the scene,” said White.
The parents were taken into custody and will be charged, but White did not say what charges they’ll face. He did say they’ll be charged with “everything they can.”
“The parents about to be locked up,” said White.
White also said that Child Protective Services were called to care for the remaining four children.
“Think about the babies that saw what happened, the trauma that they have to deal with, losing a sibling like this,” he said.
The other children were 8, two 7-year-olds, and 4, WWJ said.
“Absolutely ridiculous, irresponsible, stupid, and unnecessary,” White said. “We got a baby now that is dead weeks before Christmas. Should be getting excited about getting Christmas toys and the parents leave a gun unsupervised.”
