An 85-year-old Washington, D.C., man was arrested Thursdayfor the stabbing death of his 81-year-old wife because she made him pancakes.
Steven Schwartz was charged with second degree murder while armed in the December 10 killing of Sharron Schwartz at the couple’s home, US Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew M. Graves said in a statement.
The statement said the “defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her in the back.”
DC Metropolitan Police said they responded to the home on December 10 and found both Schwartzes with knife wounds. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, where Sharron Schwartz died. Her husbands wounds were self-inflicted.
An affidavit filed in the case said that Steven Schwartz told investigators that he had a aversion to food, and his wife was trying to make him eat, according to NBC News. The couple argued, he said, adding that his wife didn’t deserve to die and he wished that he had died.
In another court document, he said that he and his wife had been married for 40 years and that he loved her. He said he prayed the killing was a delusion and that he was recovering from a stroke.
Schwartz pleaded not guilty on Thursday in DC Superior Court and was ordered held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 2, 2024, the US Attorney’s Office said.
