A 9-month-old baby boy was orphaned in a three-vehicle car crash in Ohio earlier this month.
Samantha Hammons, 55, has been charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide in the deaths of the boy’s parents, Jacob Hahn and Savannah Harding on December 9, WTOL reports.
According to court documents, Hammons was under the influence of alcohol at the time, although she does not face that charge, according to jail records.
Local busineses and community groups have been organizing fundraisers and other donations to help with the baby boy, Beckett Hahn, and his family.
“None of us can take away the pain away, but we can help to ease the burden that is left behind,” said Jes Reynolds, the owner of Unvaulted Treasures, one of the participating businesses.
Clothing, blankets, and diapers are among the items community members have been leaving for the family. Restaurants have also pitched in, donating profits and collecting donations.
“We actually had a number of people come in and just make donations and didn’t even buy a pizza. Everyone just wants to support this family,” said DeStazio’s co-owner, Connie DeStazio.
The Sentinel-Tribune said the December 9 crash happened when Hammons’ 2018 Kia Soul, traveling at a high rate of speed, slammed into the rear of a Ford Fusion driven by Hahn, causing it to spin across the center line, where it was struck by a 2019 Dodge Journey. Hahn and Harding were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Journey, Zachery Bollinger, and his two passengers were taken to a hospital for minor injuries. Hammons also suffered minor injuries, but her two passengers were not injured.
Baby Beckett was not with his parents at the time of the crash.
