Police in Turkey apprehended the boyfriend of a woman who fell 100 feet to her death during a reported clifftop marriage proposal over the summer.
The Daily Beast reports that Nizamettin Gursu has been taken into custody, five months after his girlfriend, Yesim Demir, fell off a cliff in Canakkale on July 6.
Gursu told police that Demir had accepted his wedding proposal, but as he went to fetch food and drinks from his car, he heard her scream. Upon returning to a picnic spot where he proposed, he discovered Demur had fallen over the ledge.
However, during the investigation, police found the ring Gursu claimed he had given Demir after she accepted his proposal. The ring was still in its box inside his pocket. Police later found a broken speaker and shattered glass at the picnic scene, suggesting an altercation had taken place.
TMZ reports that family members told investigators that the victim had been planning to break up with Gursu and would have “never gotten engaged to him.” They added that she was prone to panic attacks and wouldn’t have willingly stood near a cliff.
Gursu remains jailed on suspicion of “deliberate homicide,” according to DailyMail.
