Three people have been arrested after apartment maintenance workers found a malnourished toddler with her ankles duct taped together in November.
Court documents say that Kenry Joseph Flukers, Toniesha Deshae Perkins, and Mya Jhari Breaux-McGruder have been charged with injury to a child by omission and unlawful restraint, KTRK reported.
The three are accused of failing to provide the 2-year-old girl with medical and physical care.
Documents say that the maintenance workers entered the apartmet on November 28, 2023, to replace a dishwasher. They found the little girl on the living room floor, covered in a blanket with her ankles taped up and called police.
Investigators said five other children lived in the apartment and appeared to be in good health, but the toddler, who was non-verbal, was underweight and had abusive head trauma.
The little girl was taken to a hospital, where doctors found she had brain bleeds, anemia, and kidney failure from the abuse she endured, and she may not have survived another night under those conditions.
Perkins, the little girl’s cousin, reportedly told investigators that the other children duct taped the toddler’s ankles, court records say. But Flukers, Perkins’ boyfriend, allegedly told detectives ethat Perkins used the duct tape to keep the girl out of the fridge, pantry, and trash.
