Woman’s Body Found on California Beach After Boyfriend Reports Her Missing

A woman’s body was found on a Los Angeles-area beach Friday after her boyfriend reported her missing, ABC7 reports.

Around 10:10 a.m., a lifeguard discovered the body on the sands of Manhattan Beach near the 2300 block of The Strand. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the woman on Saturday as 31-year-old Jennifer Hanie, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“The female was positively identified by officers through photographs as well as next of kin as the missing person,” the Manhattan Beach Police Department said in a news release posted to Facebook.

Police say Hanie’s boyfriend and another person started searching for her around 6:40 a.m. Friday and could not find her. They also reported her missing, according to CBS News.

“The reporting party stated he last saw his girlfriend near the water line,” the police department said. “The MBPD immediately opened an investigation and checked with surrounding agencies for reports matching the missing person’s description. The Los Angeles County lifeguards and the United States Coast Guard conducted searches of the beach and ocean.”

It was not immediately clear whether Hanie had washed ashore. Early reports are that her body was found off the coast, according to Fox 11. Officials have not released a cause of death.

Community members mourned Hanie’s death on social media.

“Absolutely heartbreaking,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. “Prayers to the family and friends.”

Manhattan Beach is southwest of Los Angeles.
