The federal government is garnishing a nearly $1 million settlement reality stars Todd and Julie Chrisley received from the state of Georgia to help pay a $17 million federal restitution from their 2022 fraud conviction.

The Chrisleys settled a lawsuit against the state of Georgia and a former director of special investigations for the state’s Department of Revenue last month, according to WSB. The lawsuit accused Joshua Waites of targeting them for state tax evasion charges because they are famous. The Chrisleys were cleared on the state charges, and Waites was fired in 2020 for falsifying credentials to be hired by the state.

The lawsuit claimed that Waites cultivated a relationship with the Chrisleys estranged daughter, Lindsey Chrisley Campbell, to compile information about her parents.

But they were found guilty of fraud in federal court in June 2022 and ordered to pay $17 million in restitution. They were sentenced to 19 years in prison, but the sentences were reduced to 15 years last fall. Todd Chrisley is serving his time in Florida, and Julie Chrisley is in prison in Kentucky.

The Chrisleys, stars of multiple reality television shows including “Chrisley Knows Best” and “According to Chrisley,” have appealed their convictions.
