A newly-released video shows Alex Murdaugh’s arrest in Florida for the 2021 murders of his wife and son at their family property in South Carolina.
CourtTV obtained the bodycam footage which shows Murdaugh’s arrest outside a rehab facility where he underwent treatment for drug and alcohol addiction after he had a family friend shoot him in the head in a failed suicide-for-hire plot. Officers were filmed approaching Murdaugh and letting him finish a bottle of water before handcuffing him and taking him into custody.
The video also shows an officer taking tobacco and a box of Benadryl out of Murdaugh’s pockets. A deputy is seen holding a bag of medications when Murdaugh asks to take one from the backseat of the police cruiser. He explains that he wants to take dicyclomine, a medication for irritable bowel syndrome, before the deputies discuss whether that is possible.
Police eventually take Murdaugh out of the car and give him water so he can take the pill, according to CourtTV. The video does not show Murdaugh’s transport to jail.
Murdaugh was convicted in March 2023 of killing his wife and son, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, and was sentenced to life in prison. In addition to two life sentences, Murdaugh was sentenced to 27 years for stealing more than $8 million from clients and his former law firm.
Alex Murdaugh sought a new trial in the double murder case, claiming a clerk of court denied his right to a fair trial by rushing jurors to reach a guilty verdict so she could self-publish a book she was writing on the trial. A judge denied his request late last month.
