Police in Pennsylvania took a man to the hospital Wednesday after he allegedly jumped from the second floor of a parking garage at Pittsburgh International Airport only to learn he was wanted for the murder of his mother in Altoona.
Allegheny County Police officers responding to the airport initially weren’t able to find the man but eventually located him in a stairwell at the parking garage and took him to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Joshua Leyo, 30, has now been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and other charges in the death of Maureen Mazenko, 61. The Altoona Police Department said he admitted stabbing her in the neck while they were arguing.
Police said Leyo was treated at the UPMC Altoona Hospital Emergency Room for a cut on his hand on Wednesday. After that, he reportedly took an Uber to the area near the Pittsburgh airport, where investigators learned he was using his mother’s bank account to make several purchases.
That’s when Altoona police learned from Allegheny County police that Leyo had been hospitalized after his jump from the parking garage. Allegheny officers went back to the hospital and arrested him while Altoona officers were on their way. Once there, Altoona officers interviewed him, and he told them he believed his mother was dead when he left the house.
Leyo will be transported back to Blair County for arraignment when he is released from the hospital.
