A young girl is dead and boy hospitalized after a hole they were digging on a Florida beach collapsed.
According to WFOR, the hold they were digging, reportedly with the help of adults, was about 6 feet deep when it collapsed. Video from the scene showed bystanders trying o dig the children out.
The children were both about 7 or 8 years old, the station said. The incident happened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Broward Fire Rescue officials said the boy is in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center.
The hole was being dug directly next to the water line, an extremely dangerous place to dig a hole, particularly one deeper than many adults are tall. And sand is notably not stable, especially near a high tide mark.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
