‘They killed my child’: Alabama Woman Found Shot Dead After Telling Family She’s Being Held Hostage

An Alabama woman who messaged her family seeking help was discovered deceased Monday, on a roadside in southwest Birmingham.

At around 2:19 a.m. on Monday, a passerby contacted 911 about a body on the side of the road at the intersection of 17th Street S.W. and Laurel Avenue. Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the call.

Mahogany Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene, succumbing to a gunshot wound.

Jackson’s mother, Gail Maddox, told AL.com that Jackson messaged her Sunday at around 7:45 a.m. and said she was being held against her will. Jackson told her mother to contact police.

“She sent me a text message that said she was being held hostage and sent her location,’’ Maddox said.

Police and family members arrived at the Serenity Apartments in the Powderly community, where an unknown woman allowed them into an apartment, but Jackson was not there. The woman reportedly said Jackson left the residence at around 2 a.m.

“I know that’s not true because she sent that message and her location at 7:46 a.m.,’’ Maddox said. “Between then and now, I don’t know what happened.”

So far, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Birmingham homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
