6 Suspects Detained but Not Yet Charged in Shooting Death of Alabama Mom

Six people have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of an Alabama mother who texted her family that she was being held hostage before her body was found under a mattress in southwest Birmingham.

None of the suspects — three men and three women — have been charged, AL.com reported, but police said they can hold them for 48 hours while they seek warrants for a formal arrest.

Mahogany Jackson, 20, was found dead shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday along the side of the road at Laurel Avenue and 17th Street SW, CrimeOnline reported. She had been shot at least once. Jackson’s mother, Gail Maddox, said that her daughter texted her at about 7:45 a.m. on Sunday and said she was being held against her will. She asked her mother to call police and gave a location.

Police and family members went to the location, but the woman who answered the door said Jackson had left several hours earlier.

A passerby contacted police after finding the body.

Birmingham police said the six suspects were detained throughout the day on Monday, beginning with a 26-year-old woman who was taken into custody at the apartment complex where Jackson said she was in her text message to her mother, AL.com said. Family members said she and Jackson knew one another and been in a dispute prior to Jackson’s death.

Later Monday morning, a 23-year-old woman was taken into custody. The remaining four suspects — another 23-year-old woman and three men, 2 of them 25 and one 18 — were booked into the Birmingham jail early Tuesday morning.

Jackson leaves a toddler daughter behind.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
