A Hawaii man who allegedly fatally stabbed his wife, their three children, and himself on Sunday reportedly had no prior history of violence.
Though police have not confirmed their identities, KHNL reported that Paris Oda, 46, killed his wife Naoko, 48, their two daughters Sakurako and Nana, ages 17 and 10, and their 12-year-old son, Orion. Paris reportedly worked as a chiropractor, and his wife occasionally worked at his clinic.
According to KHNL, Paris had no history of violence but had been in debt in recent years. Records indicated that office building owners sued him and his company in 2021 for $90,000 in rent that went back three years. Later that year, Paris agreed to pay the company $57,000 in two installments.
A former and current employee of Paris’ told KITV that Paris was happy and liked to talk to his patients until late last year. His employees also claimed that he was still dealing with financial issues at the time of his death.
“He had depression because he just totally changed — no smiling, nothing. Sometimes he looks so just grouchy,” an employee told the news outlet. “I kind of scared to talking to him because he seems really unhappy person.”
On Sunday, Honolulu police reportedly got an anonymous call about an argument but nobody responded when officers arrived. Officers discovered the five bodies after a second 911 call was placed 45 minutes later.
A knife was reportedly recovered from the scene. Police are still investigating a motive in this case.
