14-Year-Old Mississippi Girl Guns Down Her Mother, Wounds Stepfather

A 14-year-old Mississippi girl has been charged with killing her school teacher mother in a shooting late Tuesday afternoon and wounding her stepfather.

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said it was called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. and found the homeowner with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, WLBT reported. He told officers that he arrived home a few minutes earlier and found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead and his stepdaughter holding a handgun.

She shot him, he said, and then he fought with her and took the weapon. The girl ran into the backyard, jumped a fence, and disappeared.

Deputies, assisted by a state patrol helicopter, found the girl not far from the home. She was charged with murder and attempted murder and taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.

According to WAPT, the teenager was certified as an adult in juvenile court and ordered held on a $1 million bond on Wednesday. Carly Madison Gregg will make an initial appearance in county court on Thursday.

Investigators have not said what led to the shooting

Rankin County school officials said Smylie was a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter was a student.
