A 17-year-old Mississippi boy has been charged with the shooting death of a 15-year-old girl at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg.
The boy, who was charged as an adult but hasn’t been identified because of his age, was charged with on count of first-degree murder, the Pine Belt News reported. He was arrested and booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility on Saturday.
The shooting happened early in the morning on Monday at Pineview Apartments, Hattiesburg Police public information officer Tate Rutland said. He said officers were alerted to shots fired shortly before 5 a.m. and arrived to find Jayna Lumzy unresponsive in an exterior stairwell.
Officers rendered first aid until medics arrived, but she did not survive.
Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and they expect to make further arrests. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (601) 544-7900 or Metro Crime Stoppers at (601) 582-7867.
