A young Missouri boy shot and killed himself after getting his hands on a loaded, unsecured gun .

The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department was initially called Tuesday night for a “sound of shots,” but the call was upgraded to a shooting, KMBC reported.

By the time they arrived, a family member had already taken the victim, who was under the age of 5, to a hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said they detained someone at the scene for the investigation, but no charges have been filed. No further details were available.
