A Mississippi man who vanished late last month was reportedly found dead in a river on Saturday — prompting his family to call for a criminal investigation.
Lawrence County Sheriff Ryan Everett said an autopsy performed on Dau Mabil “did not reveal any type of foul play.” Mabil’s body was discovered in the Pearl River near Brookhaven, dozens of miles from where he was last seen in Jackson on March 25, according to Mississippi Today.
“My brother did not just disappear. Something has happened to my brother,” Bul Mabil, the deceased man’s brother, told WLBT. “How in the world did someone walk a trail in Jackson, Mississippi, end up 60 miles away from where they were walking in broad daylight? Is there a cover-up? Is there a cover-up from the Capitol Police Department?”
A judge has approved a temporary restraining order, led by Dau Mabil’s wife and brother, to prevent releasing any of his presumed human remains. They want the remains preserved “so that crucial evidence will not be exterminated.”
According to the Clarion Ledger, Dau Mabil’s wife claimed he texted her about going for a walk. He left his phone at home to charge, which his wife said was not unusual. That would be the last time he was heard from.
Lisa Ross, Bul Mabil’s attorney, said surveillance footage from the Museum Trail entrance in Belhaven Heights — where Dau Mabil was last seen — showed several people moving a body into a truck. Capitol police have declined to comment on the case, citing an open investigation.
“We want to know what happened to Dau,” his brother said.
