A man believed to have been driving a green Acura involved in a fatal carjacking in Florida earlier this month has been arrested in Puerto Rico.
Kevin Ocasio Justiniano, 27, was taken into custody on drug trafficking and weapons charges unrelated to the death of Katherine Aguasvivas on April 11.
Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said that investigators plan to refer Justiniano and Jordanish Torres-Garcia, believed to be the man who brandished a gun and kidnapped Aguasvivas, to the US Attorney to be charged with carjacking resulting in death.
Aguasvivas was driving a Dodge Durango in unincorporated Seminole County on April 11 when the Acura rammed her, and a man wearing a mask and holding a gun got out, as CrimeOnline reported. He eventually got into the back seat of the Durango, and Aguasvivas drove away with the Acura behind. A witness captured the incident on video.
Two hours later, the Durango was found ablaze with Aguasvivas inside, dead from gunshot wounds.
Last week, Lemma announced the arrest of Torres-Garcia, 28, on an unrelated weapons warrant from Puerto Rico. Lemma said that Torres-Garcia was a “person of interest” in the Aguasvivas murder and showed his social media profile picture in which he appeared to be wearing the exact same clothing — including the mask — as the man in the carjacking video.
Torres-Garcia’s cell phone number was also linked to the purchase of the green Acura, which in turn was linked to the murder of a tow truck driver in Orange County the day before the carjacking.
Lemma also said that a third “person of interest,” Giovany Joel Crespo Hernandez, 27, turned himself in late Monday night on a warrant for drug trafficking. Hernandez is believed to be the last person that Aguasvivas spoke with before the carjacking, chatting with him via Facetime as she drove to Seminole County from her home in south Florida. Lemma said police believe she was on her way to Hernandez’s home “to deliver money and other items.”
Hernandez is not charged in connection with the carjacking.
“This case is about drugs and money,” said Lemma. “We believe the most dangerous people connected with this case are now off our streets.”
