Police have made two arrests in the apparent road rage shooting of a deaf Indiana man last week.
Investigators say that 35-year-old Ryan Hawkins was shot in the neck on May 1 as he was driving on Interstate 65, WRTV reported. Hawkins was thrown from his Hyundai Elantra as it left the highway and crashed into a pond, WISH reported.
Investigators found bullet holes in the side of his car.
Witnesses told police that Hawkins appeared to have been trying to speed away from the suspect’s Ford Explorer, WRTV reported, but the SUV sped up next to him, and the driver opened fire.
Those eyewitness accounts and traffic cameras led investigators to the SUV and its driver. WRTV did not identify him, but WISH identified him as 24-year-old Andre Briski, who has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
According to WRTV, the suspect told police he “did it.”
“I’ll tell you right here, I did it,” he said. “I didn’t mean to, I was afraid that we were going to crash and die.”
Briski allegedly claimed that Hawkins was brake-checking him, but when police told him eyewitness accounts didn’t back up his story, he refused to talk further and demanded a lawyer.
The second person arrested was identified by WISH as Shawna Rowland. She was charged with assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice.
Hawkins was a 2013 graduate of Gallaudet University, the only liberal arts college for deaf and hard of hearing people in the country.
“Mr. Hawkins was an active and involved student and a loyal alumnus,” the school said in a statement. “His sister is an alumna, and his brother is a current student. We mourn with his family, and wish them peace and comfort.”
