Texas Woman Tries to Hire Hitman with Bitcoin to Kill Boyfriend’s Lover

A federal judge sentenced a North Texas woman to nine years in prison for using Bitcoin to pay a hitman to kill her boyfriend’s lover.

Investigators say Michelle Murphy, 58, used an ATM to convert cash to Bitcoin and transferred about $10,500 to a hitman’s cryptocurrency wallet, KDFW reported.

The plan was for the hitman to kill a woman her boyfriend was involved with.

But the hitman, found on the “dark web,” instead contacted the Department of Homeland Security in August 2023.

Investigators tracked Murphy via her digital footprint, ultimately finding that she had used a crypto ATM three times, converting cash to Bitcoin.

Agents caught up to Murphy, with the boyfriend, at Dallas Fort Worth Airport.

Murphy ultimately confessed taht she was upset about her boyfriend’s dalliance and tried to hire someone to kill the woman. She pleaded guilty to murder for hire in September.

She was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison with two years supervised release.
