A gunman opened fire inside an Amazon fulfillment center in Ohio Sunday afteroon and later shot and wounded a police officer before he died of an apparent gunshot wound.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said its 911 center began receiving calls about the shooting at the facility in West Jefferson at about 4:45 p.m. By the time they arrived, there were no reported injuries, and the suspect had fled the scene.
WSYX reported that the suspect was an Amazon employee who was located about an hour and a half later in southwest Columbus. A Columbus police dispatcher told the station the gunman fired at least one shot, hitting a Columbus Police officer. By 6:30 p.m., the dispatcher said, the gunman was in critical condition at Doctors West Hospital. Ten minutes later, the dispatcher said the gunman was dead but did not say if he was shot by an officer.
The officer who was shot was in stable condition at Grant Medical Center.
West Jefferson Police Chief Brandon Smith told WSYX that the gunman “didn’t go any further than the front area of the building” and that “there were bullet holes on the front entry and the glass.”
