Investigators Look for Boat That Killed Teen Girl in Biscayne Bay Hit-and-Run

South Florida police are searching for a boat that struck and killed a 15-year-old girl after she fell off her wakeboard in Biscayne Bay Saturday afternoon.

Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said Ella Riley Adler was in the water wearing a lifejacket, with her board attached to her feet when she was struck by the boat, which sped off after hitting her, WTVJ reported. A $20,000 reward has been offered.

Adler was a popular student at Ransom Everglades School who danced with the Miami City Ballet.

“Our hearts are broken and our community has been devastated by this tragedy. Ella shined in our classrooms and on our stages, and she embodied the mission of Ransom Everglades School,” Ransom Everglades Head of School Rachel Rodriguez said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and our prayers are with all who are mourning her loss.”

“We at Miami City Ballet and the Miami City Ballet School are utterly devastated by the heartbreaking news of this tragic accident. Ella Adler was not just a beloved student and a magnificent dancer who graced our stage in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker; she was an integral part of our family, radiating potential and promise whose kindness, warmth, and infectious joy were known to all,” a statement from the ballet company said.

Officials described the boat that killed the girl as a light blue center console that may have had blue or dark blue bottom paint and three or four white outboard engines. It was last seen headed west from Nixon Beach.

FWC Officer George Reynaud told WPLG that Adler fell into the water about a mile offshore. She was waiting to be picked up by the boat that had been towing her when she was hit.

Adler was the granddaughter of current US Ambassador to Belgium Michael Adler.
