A man suspected of gunning down a South Carolina woman as she arrived at her job Friday morning was arrested hours later in Georgia.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Katy Brooke Jones, 36, an employee at NRTC Automation in Piedmont, South Carolina. Investigators say Jones arrived at work and Derek Snyder, 33, approached her car and shot her multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Jones died at Prisma Health hospital, the coroner’s office said.
Investigators believe Snyder had perviously worked at NRTC.
The shooting was reported at about 6:45 a.m., deputies said. Anderson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Shale Remien said in a statement that evidence collected at the scene led investigators to Georgia, and Snyder was taken into custody in Buford, about 100 miles away, several hours later.
“Working in collaboration with Gwinnett (County) and Georgia authorities, as soon as Snyder left a house, officers initiated a traffic stop and caught Snyder,” she said.
Snyder is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center while he awaits extradition, Remien said.
Investigators won’t speculate on a motive at this time, she added.
