Two children were hospitalized Saturday after they were struck by a car in the Jacobs neighborhood of southwestern Louisville, Kentucky.
Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Aaron Ellis said officers were called to the scene just before 3:30 p.m. after a car hit a 7-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, WAVE reported.
Witnesses said the car was traveling fast and initially stopped, but the driver did not help the children and left the scene.
The children were taken to Norton Children’s Hospital, where the boy is in critical condition facing life-threatening injuries. The girl is expected to survive, police said.
An off-duty Jefferson County deputy found the driver and the vehicle involved not far from the scene. The driver was detained and will be facing charges, but his identity has not been released.
