1 Dead After Shooting in Florida Middle School Parking Lot During Awards Ceremony

A Florida middle school cancelled its awards ceremony Wednesday night after a shooting in the school parking lot left a man dead.

Families were gathered inside North Marion Middle School for the ceremony, but the Marion County School District said no students were involved in or witnessed the shooting, the Ocala StarBanner reported.

Deputies told WCJB that the gunman remained on scene and was taken into custody.

“It’s not related to the school,” said Lt. Paul Bloom, Marion County Sheriff’s Office public information director. “We believe these two were individuals who knew each other outside of here and this happened to be at the same place and the same time.”

Bloom said extra law enforcement would be on duty at the school this week.

“I know there’s some disappointment here with the children and there’s some disappointment here with the parents, I guess you can say in society itself, why does this have to go on at a school? I know a lot of parents are upset because if there was a dispute, why would you take that to a school parking lot?” he said.

The victim and the suspect have not been identified.
