Philadelphia police charged a 43-year-old man this week with the stabbing murders of his wife and mother-in-law.
Leandro Barberena was charged with two counts of murder and related charges after police found Alma Barberena, 58, and Angela Trejo, 75, dead in the basement of Trejo’s home in the city’s Crescentville neighborhood, WPVI reported.
Investigators said they were called to the home at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday by a 911 call apparently made by the killer, CrimeOnline reported. Barberena, found at the scene with cuts on his hands, was taken in for questioning.
Investigators also found a blood glove on the scene.
According to WCAU, Alma Barberena had gone to her mother’s house to help her elderly parents with a telemedical appointment, police said. Sometime betwee 11 a.m. and noon, Leandro Barberena arrived at the home and stabbed the two women, then called 911 and said he’d found them unresponsive.
In addition to murder, Barberena faces charges of possession of an instrument of crime, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice.
