Two New York police officers suffered minor injuries over the weekend when they tried to pull over a man who drove a scooter the wrong way down a one-way street.

The officers returned fire and hit Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata, 19, in the ankle, WPIX said.

Police said Castro-Mata has no prior criminal record but is suspected in a string of robberies conducted by a crew using motorized scooters. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said he crossed into the United States illegally last July and had been staying at migrant shelter in New York.

The officers who tried to pull Castro-Mata over were investigating the robberies when they saw him, the New York Daily News reported.

“We’re looking at him for several other robbery patterns in the Queens area where he does have other co-defendants,” Kenny said Monday morning, according to WPIX.

Police said the gun the suspect had was illegal, although they didn’t say what they meant by that. It was recovered at the scene.

Police did not say if Castro-Mata, originally from Venezuela, had requested asylum or if he was among immigrants bused to New York by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott last year.
