A Mississippi judge ruled on Tuesday that a 14-year-old girl will remain in adult custody while awaiting trial for killing her mother in March.
Carly Gregg is also accused of wounding her stepfather during the March 19 shooting that killed Ashley Smylie, 40. Gregg shot Smylie multiple times, then shot and wounded her stepfather when he returned home and fled the scene, as CrimeOnline reported.
According to WLBT, Gregg texted her stepfather from Smylie’s phone after the shooting, asking when he would be home. Then she reportedly invited a friend over to show her Smylie’s body and told her she planned to shoot her stepfather.
SuperTalk News reported that the friend who saw Smylie’s body quickly called her father to pick her up.
Officers found Gregg’s stepfather with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. SuperTalk News reported that he quickly alerted police to Smylie’s body.
The stepfather said he was shot before fighting off Gregg and taking the gun. Police eventually apprehended the teen in a field near her family’s home.
Following her arrest, Gregg allegedly asked officers, “Oh, you can kill someone, pay a lot of money, and get out of jail?”
Officials said Gregg is the only female juvenile at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center. WLBT reported that inmates slip Bible verses under her cell door and gave her a nickname.
Gregg is charged as an adult with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with physical evidence. The 14-year-old’s bond was set at $1 million.
According to WLBT, the presiding judge has denied two motions to reduce the teen’s bond.
