A Maine man has been arrested in New Orleans for the death of a toddler at a Thomaston Walmart last week.
Police and medical personnel were called to the big box store at about 7:30 p.m. on May 29 on a report about a child not breathing, the Pen Bay Pilot reported. The boy was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center and pronounced dead.
According to the Courier-Gazette, the mother, who had recently moved to Maine from Louisiana with her boyfriend, told police her son had been ill. She said she went into the store to shop, leaving the child with her boyfriend in the car. When she returned, she found the boy unresponsive.
An autopsy found the boy, identified as 22-month-old Quayshawn Wilson, died from blunt force trauma and that he was murdered, the Pilot said.
On Tuesday, police obtained an arrest warrant for the boyfriend — identified as 23-year-old Aziayh Scott — but when they went to the couple’s apartment, they found them gone. Detectives learned they had returned to Louisiana and contacted law enforcement there. .
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Scott was arrested without incident at a residence in New Orleans and that the extradition process had begun.
