NY Cop Charged With Critically Wounding Driver With His Service Weapon in Road Rage Shooting

A New York cop has been arrested and charged in an off-duty road rage shooting in New Jersey that left a man in critical condition.

Hieu Tran, 27, was arrested on Thursday and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and unlawful weapons possession for the May 17 incident, Camden County Prosecutor Grace MacAuley said.

The prosecutor said that Voorhees Township police officers were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash at about 11:15 p.m. that night and found one of the drivers involved, a 30-year-old man, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he remained hospitalized on Friday.

A probable cause affidavit says that investigators found surveillance footage showing the victim’s yellow truck stopping at a traffic light at an intersection and white SUV arriving as well, the New York Times reported. The truck moved alongside the SUV, and moments later, the truck accelerated through the red traffic light, crashing into other vehicles. The SUV also sped through the light and drove away.

The affidavit says that further footage showed the driver of the SUV stopping for gas and paying with a credit card belonging to Tran. Detectives also determined that he owned an SUV similar to the one seen in the surveillance footage.

Phone records also put Tran in the area, and three 9 mm shell casings found at the scene were determined to have come from Tran’s service weapon, according to the affidavit.

MacAuley said Tran was taken into custody on Thursday and would be extradited to New Jersey to stand trial.

The Times said that Tran joined the New York Police Department in February 2021 and was working in the public information office since last year. He had previously been assigned to the 28th Precinct in Harlem. Police said he was suspended without pay on Friday.
