Teen Overdoses After Taking Fake Percocet That Was Actually ‘100% Fentanyl’

A New York man who allegedly sold fentanyl to a woman in November 2022, leading to her death, is due in court next month.

Shannon Praylor, Jr., 19, was 17 when he was charged in July for Paige Gibbons’ overdose death in Monroe County. Praylor allegedly sold Gibbons’ friend a Percocet — which her father said ended up being “100 percent fentanyl,” FOX reported.

Gibbons, 19, was reportedly with two friends when she overdosed. One of the other friends almost died, while the other friend who did not take the pills witnessed the ordeal, according to Fox.

Fox reported that Gibbons bought what she believed was Percocet over social media. Percocet is a medication that treats moderate to severe pain.

Gibbons’ parents told the news outlet that their late daughter was not a regular drug user.

“She trusted, maybe, her friend or her friend trusted somebody that they knew,” Gibbons’ mother said. “We just thought of her as a little naive in that respect. Unfortunately, it cost her her life.”

A May 2024 report from the Centers for Disease Control stated that fentanyl led to more than 74,000 deaths last year. Though the agency noted that it was a slight decrease from 2022, it warned that some states saw an increase in opioid-related fatalities.

Gibbons’ father urged, “We don’t want her to be judged for the worst mistake she made.”

Court records indicate that Praylor, who is being prosecuted as a juvenile, will stand trial in August for second-degree manslaughter and various drug charges. Next month, he will be arraigned on lesser charges, including third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.
