Mom’s Ex-Boyfriend Charged in Shooting That Killed 15-Year-Old Girl, Wounded 5-Year-Old Boy

A 27-year-old Alabama man has been charged with capital murder in a deadly shooting that left his ex-girlfriend’s 15-year-old daughter dead and her 5-year-old son wounded.

Birmingham Police said that Otis Lee Montgomery III has also been charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied building, WBMA reported.

Investigators say Montgomery fired into the mother’s apartment from outside shortly after noon on Wednesday, killing Cornelia Rose Lathan and striking her brother in the leg. The boy was taken to Children’s of Alabama for treatment.

Police, who said they had responded to the apartment earlier for a domestic all, said officers identified Montgomery as a suspect and located him multiple blocks away near the airport less than an hour later, AL.com said.

He was taken into custody and charged on Friday. He’s being held without bond.
