A 34-year-old Alabama man has been arrested and charged with robbing and sodomizing two elderly women in their home.

The Florence Police Department said it was called to a home on a burglary call late Saturday afternoon and found the two victims inside with multiple injuries.  Officers provided first aid until the arrival of Florence Fire and Rescue and Lifeguard EMS.

A 79-year-old woman was lifeflighted to University of Alabama-Birmingham hospital, and a 76-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to North Alabama Medical Center. Both victims remained hospitalized Sunday morning.

Investigators found doorbell camera video showing a suspect leaving the area, and he was identfied as Michael Joe Kirkland Jr. The investigators also found evidence linking Kirkland to the crime and arrested him on charges of burglary, sodomy, robbery, and assault.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and further charges are pending.

Kirkland is being held without bail at the Lauderdale County Detention Center.
