Dead Woman Found in Backseat of Car After Accident, Police Say Death Not Related to Crash

Minnesota sheriff’s deputies, investigating a single car crash on Saturday, found a dead woman in the back seat of the vehicle and arrested the driver for interference with a dead body.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office said the accident happened just before 7 a.m. on Saturday on Interstate 90, south of Rochester. When they arrived, the driver was out of the vehicle being tended by a passerby.

Deputies checked the vehicle, where they found a 35-year-old woman dead in the backseat.

“The condition of the deceased was suspicious, and it was immediately apparent that the death was not a result of the motor vehicle accident,” the sheriff’s office said.

The vehicle’s driver, identified as 32-year-old Margot Lewis, was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries from the crash and then taken into custody after she was medically cleared.

According to KMSP, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension joined the investigation and requested a welfare check at the home of the dead woman.

“At approximately 8 p.m., the BCA, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, and Minneapolis Police investigators executed a search warrant at the address,” Minneapolis police said. “A scene indicating violence was located inside of the address.”

The victim’s name has not been released pending next-of-kin notifications, and Lewis is expected to appear in court on Tuesday on the interference charge and another of obstructing legal processes, according to jail records. It’s not clear if she is facing charges in Hennepin County, where the “scene indicating violence” was found.
