Hiker Takes Human Remains to Goodwill Instead of Calling Cops

An investigation is underway in South Carolina after skeletal human remains were found in a wooded area on Saturday.

WHNS reported that someone discovered the bones in some woods near the Graylyn Subdivision, which is located in Anderson County. They brought the bones to a nearby Goodwill — where someone helped them put the remains in a box and call the police.

According to WYFF, officials said the bones were left in a cardboard box near the Goodwill’s drop-off box. The person who dropped them off was eventually identified.

The Independent Mail reported that a male hiker was the person who discovered the bones and left them at the Goodwill. A woman was at the scene when police arrived and gave them more information about the discovery.

Police said the box contained seven bones, but two were later determined to be animal bones. They also said that the bones were scattered over a large area and appeared to have been there for a long time, WYFF reported.

Authorities returned to the area where the woman discovered the bones and found additional bones and items. Officials have not disclosed what those items were.

It could take several months to formally identify the bones. According to the Independent Mail, officials estimate the bones belong to someone who has been missing for a few years.
