9-Year-Old Virginia Girl Wounded When Her Older Brother Leaves ‘One of’ His Loaded Guns Unsecured

A 9-year-old Virginia girl was wounded Friday when her older brother left “one of his loaded firearms unsecured on the bed” and another minor “hit the trigger … causing it to discharge.”

Deputies arrived on scene and found the girl with a gunshot wound to the leg just above the ankle, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said. They began first aid until the Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Unit arrived.

She was airlifted to a medical facility for treatment of her non-life-threatening wound while deputies began their investigation of the shooting.

Her 19-year-old brother, Kevin Hairston, was arrested and charged with child endangerment and reckless handling of a firearm.

It turned out he also had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, one in Martinsville for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and the second in Henry County for contempt of court.

Hairston is being held without bond at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.
