Two masked robbers invaded a backyard wedding celebration last week and shot the groom in the head.
Ducle and Manuel Gonzalez married Friday night after a decade and two children together, KDSK reported. The ceremony was held in their backyard in the Dutchtown neighborhood of St. Louis.
As the night was winding down, sometime after midnight, two armed men came into the yard. Yaribeth Peña, the bride’s sister, told KDSK she ran inside and heard a gunshot.
Police said one of the would-be robbers stood behind 32-year-old Manuel Gonzalez and shot him in th head. The two men ran away with nothing.
Gonzalez is in critical condition.
“He’s fighting for his life. We are hoping he pulls through. (My sister) is distraught, she’s depressed, she’s heartbroken. They were saying my brother-in-law was going for his wallet and maybe they thought he was going for a weapon,” Peña said.
Peña’s father said that Gonzalez has made some hand movements, giving the family hope.
Family members told KTVI that police said they have not yet collected all the evidence from the scene and were still interviewing witnesses.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and encourage anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
