A 4-year-old Texas girl died on Wednesday after she was reportedly left unattended in a hot car.
Emergency crews responded to a Houston apartment complex regarding a girl with heat exhaustion. The girl was sent to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to KTRK.
Houston police said the girl, a woman, and two other children went out to handle errands earlier in the day. Once home, everyone got out of the car except the 4-year-old who police believe was forgotten, KTRK reported.
“Apparently in the confusion, they left the 4-year-old female in the truck. Once they discovered the child was missing, they went back outside, found the child, and called the police department and the fire department,” Houston police Lieutenant Larry Crowson said, according to KHOU.
The news outlet reported that officers are seeking surveillance footage regarding the incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will ultimately decide whether charges will be filed in this case.
The 4-year-old girl is the seventh child to have died in a hot car this year. According to No Heat Stroke, 29 children died of vehicular heatstrokes in 2023.
