Rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is the “subject” of a federal grand jury in New York looking into his mounting legal troubles.
NBC News reported that Combs’ lawyers were told last week he is the “subject” of the grand jury investigation but not a “target,” which is apparently the difference between being generally named in the investigation and being on the verge of having charges brought, according to two “sources.”
Sources previously told CNN that a grand jury already existed and at least some of the victims who have filed lawsuits against Combs had been told they may be called to testify, CrimeOnline reported. Federal investigators at the time confirmed the existence of a criminal investigation but declined further comment.
The sources who spoke with NBC said that Combs has not received a letter saying he is a “target” of the federal investigation, but the federal district court isn’t required to notify its targets that they are targets either.
Federal agents raided Combs’ houses in Los Angeles and Miami earlier this year as part of a sex trafficking investigation. Multiple people have filed civil lawsuits against him, claiming he coerced them into sex, using his status and drugs.
The raids came four months after ex Cassie Ventura filed an explosive lawsuit and then settled it with him the next day. More accusers followed.
Then came the release of a video showing Combs, who has denied all claims against him, savagely beating Ventura in a hotel hallway, just as she said he did in her lawsuit. After the release of the video, Combs released his own video on social meda admitting that he had beaten Ventura and saying he was now a better man.
The latest lawsuit filed against Combs came this week from an adult film star who accused him of sex trafficking.
An attorney, Jonathan Davis, denied those allegations on behalf of his client, calling them “baseless claims.”
