A man has been charged with murdering a missing 14-year-old trans girl whose dismembered remains were found at a Pennsylvania park late last month.
On June 25, Pauly Likens’ partial remains were reportedly discovered partially submerged in Shenango Lake. WPXI reported that additional remains were found in remote locations in the following week, and DaShawn Watkins, 29, has been charged with her murder.
Likens had vanished on June 23 — the same day prosecutors said she met Watkins at the canoe launch along the Shenango River. Watkins and Likens reportedly met on a dating app.
Video footage allegedly showed Likens going to the Riverwalk Apartments, where Watkins was reportedly filmed struggling to carry a duffel bag. He was also seen the next day carrying multiple bags and garbage bags, according to WPXI.
The Sharon Herald reported that a search of Watkins’ apartment uncovered blood in the hallway, bathroom, and under the bathroom flooring. A receipt from June 23 allegedly indicated that Watkins purchased a saw with exchangeable blades.
Mercer County coroners determined Likens died from sharp force trauma to the head.
“Only an absolute monster could do something like that to anyone, let alone a child,” the slain teen’s aunt told WPXI.
Arrested on July 2, Watkins has not been charged with a hate crime in Likens’ murder.
“PSP [Pennsylvania State Police] does not believe it in fact is one because the defendant admitted to being a homosexual and the victim was reportedly a trans girl,” Mercer County District Attorney Peter C. Acker stated in an email to the Philadelphia Gay News.
Watkins is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, tampering with or fabricating evidence, and abuse of a corpse. He is due in court on July 17.
