An Ohio man was sentenced to 50 to 55.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felonies stemming from his kidnapping of a woman and holding her prisoner for days while use a baseball bat and a metal chain to torture her.
Shane Edward Hooper, 36, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of strangulation for the incident, which took place between May and early June 2023, according to Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan’s office.
Grogan said Hoooper initially held the woman prisoner in her own home, where he nailed doors and windows shut to prevent her escape.
“In addition to physical abuse, Hooper subjected the victim to intense psychological terror, threatening to kill both her and her family,” Grogan’s office said in a statement. “In a desperate turn of events, he moved the victim to another location on Silver Street in Marion, where observant individuals recognized her distress and contacted law enforcement.”
After her rescue, doctors found she had suffered multiple broken bones and had open wounds and eight fractured ribs.
“Shane Hooper created a torture chamber and trapped this woman in it,” Grogan said after the sentencing. “Now he’ll be trapped in prison for at least the next 50 years.”
Grogan also praised the citizens who spoke up, saying “their actions likely saved this woman’s life.”
