Tennessee Mom Extradited From Texas to Stand Trial in Toddler’s Braided Dog Toy Beating Death

A Tennessee mom charged in her toddler son’s death has been extradited from Texas to stand trial.

Sharday Bakare’s boyfriend, 23-year-old Anthony Andrews, was arrested last year and indicted in May in the September 2023 death of 2-year-old Anthony Bakare, WMC reported.

Bakare has been charged with first degree murder, aggravated child neglect, and aggravated child abuse.

The toddler was found not breathing on September 5 and was rushed to a hospital but did not survive, CrimeOnline previously reported.

Bakare initially told police that she went to bed at about 11:15 p.m. and that Andrews took over watching the toddler. She said that she had seen Andrews discipline her son before with a belt or a braided dog toy. She also said she had recently noticed “excess bruising and wounds” on the boy, but Andrews told her he had “fallen out of bed.”

Andrews told investigators he hit the boy “seven to eight times” Monday morning on the back, face, and buttocks, using the dog toy, and admitted that he hit him “harder than [he] should with a belt a few weeks earlier. He also said he slapped the boy “at least once or twice” and shoved him into a corner before putting him back in bed.

Several minutes later, Andrews said, the boy fell out of bed, unresponsive.

Bakare fled Tennessee after Memphis Police charged her as well as Andrews in May. The US Marshals Service said it found her at a home in Glenn Heights, Texas, and arrested her on June 17.

Andrews is being held on a $750,000 bond and is due back in court on July 24. Bakare is being held on a $1 million bond. Her next court date has not been set.
