An Ohio man was arrested in Utah this week after he allegedly kidnapped a 15-year-old girl in California.
An affidavit says Ryan Gray Patch, 27, was booked into the Iron County Jail for investigation into aggravated kidnapping, endangerment of a child, possession of drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia, KSL reported.
Patch was arrested Tuesday night at a Cedar City gas station after officers got a call from a San Diego mother who said her daughter had been kidnapped and could be in Cedar City.
The mother said her daughter met patch online and that he took her Tuesday morning. The daughter called her parents and said she was at the Love’s Travel Stop in Cedar City. She described seing semit-trucks and a church for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and described the black Honda Civic Patch was driving.
She also described Patch as wearing all black clothing, having “golden hair,” and armed with a knife, the affidavit said.
Iron County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the travel plaza and found a black Honda Civic with an Ohio license plate and man asleep in the driver’s seat who matched the girl’s description. She was in the back seat.
“As I was passing the vehicle, the male appeared to wake up and sat up in the seat. I found that the driver matched the description that the female had given earlier,” the affidavit said.
The deputy pulled up behind the car and had Patch exit the car. He was taken into custody without incident.
A search of the car uncovered drugs and a knife.
Patch told detectives he didn’t know the girl was 15 until she told him while they were driving through Nevada.
“Instead of contacting the authorities or taking the juvenile home, (Patch) continued to drive further away from her house and parents,” the affidavit says. “He also admitted that in the beginning, he was suspicious of her age and asked for an identification to verify her age. She never sent proof of her age.”
The victim was taken to the Children’s Justice Center but declined to be interviewed by police.
Patch is being held without bond, according to jail records.
