Retired Probation Officer Murders Grandson’s Mother, Then Turns Gun on Herself in Front of Infant: Police

A paternal New York grandmother is accused of shooting the mother of her grandson before turning the gun on herself Friday morning.

According to ABC 7, Marissa Galloway, 45, picked up her son from his father’s residence at 519 East 88th Street between York and East End Avenue just before 9 a.m. on Friday.

Galloway had secured her 4-year-old son in the car and was putting away his stroller when Kathleen Leigh, 65, the boy’s grandmother, shot Galloway in the head. Once on the ground, Leigh shot her in the back with a 9mm handgun.

After shooting Galloway, Leigh shot herself in the head. The 9mm handgun was found on the ground between the women.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Galloway was taken to Cornell Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Leigh was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Kenny said the preliminary motive was an ongoing domestic dispute. There were five domestic incident reports and two complaints taken by the NYPD.

Leigh was “a retired Cook County probation officer living in New York City with family members for the past three years,” Kenny said.

Galloway was a teacher in Westchester and a volunteer assistant track coach at Fordham University.

The university said the community is “deeply saddened by the tragic death…. We keep Marissa and her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers,” reported ABC 7.

Galloway also had a 1-year-old daughter, who was not at the scene and is unrelated to the parties involved.
